2 Euro BU 2025 550th anniversary birth of MichelangeloThe Vatican City State presents the 2 euro commemorative coin dedicated to the great genius of the Italian Renaissance, Michelangelo Buonarroti, on the occasion of the 550th anniversary of his birth. The reverse depicts the Dome of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, an architectural masterpiece designed by Michelangelo and one of the highest symbols of Christianity. Beneath it appears a reference to the structure of the vault of the Sistine Chapel, which he masterfully frescoed. On the left appears the artist s autograph signature, Michelagniolo, reproduced from original documents. This issue celebrates Michelangelo as an extraordinary sculptor and painter, as well as a profound interpreter of the Christian faith. At its centre is the coat of arms of Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, who was entrusted with managing the Holy See s assets during the interregnum. Surmounted by the umbraculum and crossed keys, symbols of papal authority in the absence of a pontiff, the coat of arms evokes the solemnity and institutional continuity of the Church. The dove depicted in the legend represents the Holy Spirit, invoked to enlighten the cardinals as they discern God's will in choosing the new Pope. The coin pays tribute to the Camerlengo s role during one of the most delicate phases of ecclesial life.

20 euro gold proof 2024 95th anniversary of the Lateran TreatyThis 20 euro gold coin commemorates the 95th anniversary of the historic signing of the Lateran Treaty, a fundamental and solemn event in the history of relations between the Italian State and the Holy See. Artist Daniela Longo places the profile bust of Pope Pius XI at the centre, a key figure in the delicate diplomatic process that led to the agreements. In his encyclical Ubi Arcano (23 December 1922), Pius XI referred to the painful and distressing situation between the Italian State and the Apostolic See, sending Italy a message of reconciliation: Italy has nothing to fear from the Holy See. The Pope, whoever he may be, will always repeat: I have plans for peace and not for harm (Jer. 29:11); plans of true peace, and thus inseparable from justice. With the signing of the Lateran Treaty on 11 February 1929, the State of Vatican City was officially established, an autonomous and sovereign entity under the exclusive authority of the Pontiff.

Artist Gabriele Di Maulo pays tribute to the great poet from Arezzo, Italy, by transforming into an image one of the poems dedicated to his beloved Laura. In the bottom right-hand corner of the coin s reverse side, we see a profile of the poet while offering a laurel branch to Laura, whose figure angelic in form appears with her hair scattered like an aura stirred by a light breeze. The image is expressive and leads us back to the notion of idealised eternal love, expressed several times by Petrarca in the Canzoniere collection of poems, one of the most important works of Italian literature.
